Wear It Forward!

UCSF Alumni Graduation Gown Donation Project

What is this project?

UCSF First Generation Support Services (FGSS) and the Alumni Association of UCSF created this project to help our First Generation to College students with some of their graduation expenses. The project will allow us to support first-generation UCSF students with free graduation gown rentals. Gowns will be collected from alumni donations and lent out to students for their ceremony and other graduation experiences.

UCSF graduation regalia typically costs about $150, with doctoral regalia costing $400 to $925. Your donations will help first-generation students alleviate some of the financial hardship of graduation and allow them to fully experience the graduation day they have worked so hard to earn.

How can I help? What gowns and hoods are accepted?

If you have a dry-cleaned gown or hood in good condition (i.e., no holes, stains, or rips) that you would like to donate, please complete this donation form, print it, and return it with your donation by mail or in person.

We are currently prioritizing the collection of doctoral and master’s gowns and hoods in all sizes from the following schools/programs:

  • School of Medicine

  • School of Nursing

  • Graduate Division

  • Physical Therapy

I no longer have my gown or hood. Can I make a financial donation to help support this project?

Yes! Visit the UCSF Alumni Graduation Gown Donation Project Fund to help offset the costs of additional gowns for the rental program and future dry cleaning expenses.

What is UCSF First Generation Support Services?

Approximately 30% of UCSF students identify as among the first in their family to attend college. FGSS supports and celebrates the educational journey of students whose parents/caregivers did not graduate from a four-year college. Learn more about their efforts at First Generation Support Services

I have more questions! Who can I contact?
