We’re thrilled to offer a range of clubs and activities for UCSFRA members.
Our many activities and clubs are fostered by, but not directly managed by, the UCSFRA.
Groups and Clubs
UCSFRA Book Club
The Book Club meets once a month on the third or fourth Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with location specifics provided prior to the gathering. Members discuss a book chosen by the group, and share thoughts and opinions as filtered through their life experiences. It’s a lively group that enjoys expressing their points of view on the latest novel or a classic gem.

UCSF Retirees Association Hiking Club
Formed in 2007, the Hiking Club provides an excellent way to make new friends and stay healthy while enjoying the beautiful Bay Area outdoors. The group plans monthly hikes, usually held on the third Friday of each month.
Past excursions have included seashore explorations, hikes in the North Bay, Peninsula, and East Bay, as well as a three-day adventure in Yosemite. Hikes average about five miles and are of moderate intensity.

Golf Club at UCSF
Founded in the 1970s, the Golf Club at UCSF has approximately 75 members. Members include students, faculty, staff, alumni, and retirees, as well as friends and family of the UCSF community. Tournaments are played once a month at various courses throughout the Bay Area from March to October, including a two-day tournament near Monterey.
Anyone who has a love of the game is encouraged to join the club. Golf experience is necessary, but players demonstrate all levels of skill – indices range from 0.9 to 44.0. Although players compete during tournaments, most are more interested in camaraderie and having a good time. The only real “competition” comes when the group plays the UC Berkeley Golf Club each year in July.

Out-to-Lunch Club
The Retirees Out-to-Lunch Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at a restaurant chosen by the group. One person accepts responsibility for coordinating with the restaurant if reservations are accepted, and notifies members of the upcoming date, time, and restaurant details. The check plus tax and tip is split equally among attendees with the exception of alcoholic beverages, which each person takes care of on their own. We rotate coordinator duties on a volunteer basis. In the past, the group has visited restaurants in San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo, but there are no set limits to where we can explore.

“In Stitches!”: Knitting and Crocheting Club
Are you a beginner who wants to learn to knit or crochet, or an experienced knitter or crocheter looking to share ideas or techniques with others? If so, we invite you to join “In Stitches!” The club meets monthly in San Francisco, with initial supplies available for beginners.

UCSFRA is happy to provide members with information on how to explore and enjoy all the Bay Area has to offer “On Your Own.”
On Your Own provides the inside scoop on how to get last-minute (and often low-cost) tickets to Bay Area venues and also tracks when museums and other cultural institutions have free or reduced-price admissions.

San Francisco Opera (Civic Center)
Call the San Francisco Opera Box Office at (415) 864-3330 the day before a performance to ask if Senior Rush Tickets will be available. Purchase tickets on the day of the performance after 11 a.m. Limit two tickets in orchestra section at $30 each.
San Francisco Symphony (Civic Center)
Call the San Francisco Symphony Box Office at (415) 503-5577 after 6 p.m. on the day before a performance, or after 6 p.m. on Friday for weekend performances. Purchase tickets, if available, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day of the performance. Limit two tickets at $20 each.
California Academy of Sciences (Golden Gate Park)
Take advantage of Free Admission Days, available to San Francisco residents based on zip code. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis and early arrival is recommended due to typically high demand.
de Young Museum (Golden Gate Park) and the Legion of Honor (Lincoln Park)
Enjoy free admission the first Tuesday of each month or take MUNI and save anytime – both museums offer a $2 discount to MUNI riders with a Fast Pass or transfer “proof of payment.”
Discount only available at the time of in-person purchase; does not apply to internet sales. Note: Special exhibit fees still apply.
The Exploratorium (Pier 15)
All Exploratorium visitors can pay-what-they-wish on Community Days, when museum entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Asian Art Museum (SF Civic Center)
General admission, as well as admission to the family programs offered that day, is free on the first Sunday of every month. Admission is granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to capacity restrictions, admission not guaranteed.
Note: Additional entrance fees apply to special exhibitions.
Oakland Museum of California
General admission is free on the first Sunday of every month.
The Tech Museum of Innovation (San Jose)
General admission is free on Community Day, which is held one day only each year.
