The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach lies within the Montara State Marine Reserve, part of a state-wide network of marine protected areas (MPAs). This rocky seashore hosts a living community of marine life with a variety of algae, crabs, sponges, sea stars, mollusks, and fish making their homes in the intertidal area. The reserve is set aside to protect this complex, but fragile, community.

Led by a trained volunteer naturalist, we will explore the reef’s many wonders including the ecological systems of the intertidal reef, plus the beach, uplands, and marsh/wetlands complex. The tour time coincides with a low tide, which is the best time to explore tide pools and to observe the harbor seals that swim in the reserve’s waters. If we are fortunate, we may also see some small pups lying near their mothers since birthing season runs between March and June.

Cost will be $5.

Please visit the registration page for full details. Deadline to register is Thursday, March 26.
