Inarguably America’s most notorious island, Alcatraz is also the most misunderstood. “The Rock” embodies decades of history, beginning with its first sighting by Europeans in 1769 through its present standing as the top paid tourist attraction in San Francisco.

In his talk, former National Park ranger and historian John A. Martini will share about the island’s infamous past as a federal penitentiary, which operated from 1934 to 1963, as well as its lesser-known roles as a Civil War fortress, a political prison for Confederate sympathizers, a military prison for recalcitrant U.S. Army soldiers, and the site of a Native American political occupation in the late 1960s
