In 2005, then-medical student Elizabeth Barnert traveled to El Salvador to build a DNA bank that helps reunite family members forcibly separated during the Salvadoran civil war. This fieldwork, including 15 years of interviews, led to Reunion: Finding the Disappeared Children of El Salvador, a groundbreaking ethnography illuminating the cycles of poverty and violence that drive immigration and ongoing separations around the world.

Join us online as renowned anthropologist Philippe Bourgois leads a lively discussion with Dr. Barnert as she shares not only stories about what it was like to walk alongside young adult children seeking biological kin but also her personal journey in writing Reunion — and what’s next!
