Like a majestic grand hotel, the Victorian-era Sutro Baths dazzled visitors with its over-the-top opulence and its many attractions all covered by more than 100,000 square feet of glass: seven swimming pools, a museum, restaurants, tropical plants, promenades, and seating for thousands of spectators. The creation of Comstock millionaire Adolph Sutro, the Baths opened in 1894 and ended in 1966 by fire.

Today, visitors explore its concrete ruins and mysterious tunnels, which are protected by the National Park Service as part of the larger Lands End site. In this talk led by historian John A. Martini, join UCSF retirees to learn about the rise and fall — as well as lingering nostalgia — of Sutro’s Glass Palace.

UCSF is committed to making its facilities, activities, and events accessible. To request a reasonable accommodation for this event, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible.
